CHALLENGES FACED BY THE CUSTOMER –
As a organisation operating from 68 separate locations, the company faced a number of challenges regarding the efficient dissemination of information to the point of need. Initially a WAN infrastructure was created with desktop PC’s at the remote sites linking back to the head office mainframe. However, the large number of PC’s deployed created significant I.T. management and support issues as well as being a target for thieves.

BENEFITS THE CUSTOMER GAINED –
In the end, the VXL Itona was a clear winner. “The unit is reasonably priced, has no moving parts and uses far less power than a PC”. The VXL Itona units are configured at Macsteel HQ and shipped to the various locations throughout the country. There it is a simple “plug & play” operation for the local staff. “There is no need for an army of people to sort things out”.
The rollout of VXL Itona’s to Macsteel began in 2005 and they replaced the PC’s when they reached their planned end of life. To date nearly 800 VXL Itona desktops have been deployed throughout the organisation, with the assistance of Open Architecture Systems, providing Citrix design and support services to Macsteel and supplied by VXL’s South African Distributor, IT Wise.

CHALLENGES FACED BY THE CUSTOMER –

ABES required VLC media player, open office, xampp, pdf reader and Turbo C to be run locally on thin client. Initially we tested on windows 7 embedded. But then due to License costs and Price reduction we had to test on Linux- Ubuntu ver 12.1. We installed all required software on Ubuntu and provided a demo unit to the customer which was successful.

Challenges faced by the customer due to this manual handling of documents-

• The searching of documents/student records among thousands of files was a challenge for the registrar office staff.
• There was a risk due to loss of physical document.
• Quality of the physical documents deteriorated over a period of time, which made the readability of the documents a challenge.
• During/after the recruitment process if the placement company asks for a document for verification then locating the document after initiating the request, took almost a week’s time. Then the retrieved document was scanned and sent to the concerned verifier.

• The electronic capture and storage of the admission related documents mitigated the risk of loss/damage of physical docs.
• The captured electronic records of students were tagged with business values which made the search very easy to retrieve the student records. There is no need to refer to the physical documents in the warehouse.
